Simple Joys

For those of you tuning in so that you can delve into the depths of my mind and soul, today will be a disappointment, maybe. I'm kind of tired, it's sticky, and I'm getting a little self conscious. I like to trust people with the 'real me,' but I get kind of wary because I'm never quite sure if people will like what they see. There's probably a whole lot of therapy waiting to happen with that situation. Maybe sometime later. It's also hard to develop coherent thoughts in the moments of adult time that I have during the day, and I just don't have these conversations all that much anymore. It's not that I don't want to, I just don't. Life happens.

So, I'm taking the opportunity to tune you into some of the things that bring me simple joys. I like simple joys.

Carly (who happens to be one of my former students and should be considered to be a part of the aforementioned group of kick-ass students) has scored some amazing freebies through her blog, and now she's sharing the wealth by hosting a giveaway of favorite summer items. Check it out. She's cool. She runs, and learns, and wants to teach, and she's getting married!! She's got her stuff together. Impressive. Way to go, Carly!

Jackie (who happens to be my sister-in-law and just generically cool irregardless of the fact that she married my brother) has been posting some freakin' amazing recipes on her blog. She's into Oreos lately, and posted a recipe for Oreo Cheesecake bars that sounds to-die-for. It's a good thing that I don't have a food processor, or I would have been forced to make (and eat) this deliciousness.

Speaking of recipes, I found this little gem on another blog that I follow. I never would have thought to mix watermelon with balsamic and feta, but it sounds heavenly. Once I decide to start grocery shopping and cooking again, I'm going to have to put this one together.

And, music, in general, tends to bring me simple pleasures. One of my classes has been listening to music while they work in the lab these last few weeks, and Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind was on the playlist today. That song just always makes me smile. It came out in the spring/summer of 1997 which happened to be the summer after my freshman year of college. That was a particularly suck-tastic summer for a whole variety of suck-tacular reasons, and that song got me through. For whatever reason, it just made me smile and kind of empowered me. It still makes me smile because I know that I made it through that suck-arific summer, and things got better.

What are your simple joys?

  1. Awwww thanks. :-)

And I think that Third Eye Blind song was on one of the CDs we listened to when our class did lab. I like it too.

  2. It's funny that such a catchy song could be about crystal meth!

Glad to hear you started a blog, it's now on my Google Reader!

    :)
